Air Conditioning Basics: A/C 101

Recommended Performance Based Air Conditioning Specifications

 

 

An air conditioning system shall be supplied that at an ambient temperature of 95degrees Fahrenheit and at 50% humidity is capable of reducing the temperature inside the vehicle 25 degrees F within 30 minutes of listed situation. The installation of the said system shall be performed by factory trained technicians in a manner consistent with accepted industry standards. System will be evaluated based upon the quality and performance of the components supplied, ability to meet a pull down test, warranty period, installation reputation, size, weight, durability, reliability, head pressure analysis, electrical load test, and amount of engine RPM's required to operate the system. Vendor shall submit all technical data with this bid as requested below. In addition to these requirements the complete a/c system installation shall be subject to a final ultrasonic leak detection test. Other requirements:

    1. Only HFC -134A environmentally friendly refrigerant shall be used
    2. The compressor/s used shall be the best available for the bus specified and shall be warranted for 2 years minimum. The compressor mounting bracket/s shall be of sufficient strength to support the compressor and bed belt loads and yet insure that the drive pulley (electric clutch assembly) remains in close alignment with the engine drive pulley. Suitability of the compressor/s will be judged based upon the results of the performance test and data supplied by the bidder.
    3. A/c system shall be "Made in America."
    4. The interior evaporators (if used) shall be fastened and supported to the roof bows as per industry standard accepted practices.
    5. Evaporator drains shall do so below the floor line. Drain lines shall be made of high quality material and shall be concealed from the interior. (Except roof top models!)
    6. The Interior ABS Covers shall have No sharp corners or edges.
    7. The Interior ABS Plastic Covers used shall conform to FMVSS #302 guidelines.
    8. Refrigerant hoses shall be of a barrier design to prevent permeation.
    9. Evaporator and condenser coils shall be advanced rifled design or equal for maximum heat transfer efficiency.
    10. Condensers shall be constructed of lightweight, non-corrosive, aircraft aluminum or equal.
    11. All Wiring shall be color-coded and run through jacketed harnesses (not split-loom type). Color-coded wiring and piping diagrams shall be supplied with bid.
    12. All condenser/s shall include a sight glass with "O" ring fitting.
