When the subcooled liquid refrigerant emerges from the Condenser, it again flows through interconnecting tubing and leak-tight fittings; this time to an element known as the Filter/Dryer. Even with careful manufacturing, assembly and service procedures, it is not uncommon for small amounts of contaminants such metal chips, water, sand, etc., to find their way into air conditioning systems. As its name implies, this device filters "dirt" from the circulating refrigerant and lubricant. Further, the "Dryer" portion (a desiccant material) causes any internal water molecules to be trapped out of the circulating refrigerant and oil mixture. The capture of water molecules prevents the formation of acids and other compounds that could combine with the refrigerant and cause harm to the a/c loop.
